space_hopper

Do you remember Space Hoppers?

Description: A large orange rubbery ball that you were meant so sit on and bounce up and down. Doesn't sound very exciting but when they arrived in the early 70's, they became extremely popular for some reason.

Space Hoppers were a must have toy for every 70's child and the craze continued well in to the 80's.

Space Hoppers are apparently also known as Hoppity Hops and Kangaroo balls but I never heard them called that personally.

Editor's memory: I remember having great fun on the Space Hopper but I don't really remember why. They didn't bounce very high and I seemed to fall off a lot. Some things you don't question - they're just cool.

rubiks_cube

Do you remember Rubik's Cube?

Description: Addictive 3D puzzle game invented by Erno Rubik. The idea was to jumble up all the coloured squares and then try to restore it to its original condition (each face of the cube a single colour). It sounded simple but as many found out it was near impossible.

Editor's memory: I never managed to solve the Rubik's Cube but I did figure out that if you carefully peeled off the little coloured stickers you could reposition them one by one until it looked like you had completed it. Trouble is the stickers never stuck properly after that and they kept falling off leaving you with a useless black lump of plastic.

raleigh-chopper

Do you remember Raleigh Chopper?

Description: The Raleigh Chopper designed by Alan Oakley became one of the most sought after bikes in history. Early Choppers were on sale in the late 60's but shot to fame in the 70's when every child (and some adults) wanted one. The bike was characterised by its high back and long seat and motorbike rear wheel and was probably the first bike to have a centrally positioned gear shift.

Raleigh has recently put the Choppers into production once more.

Editor's memory: I remember thinking of the Chopper as the Harley Davidson of bicycles. Apparently though, apart from its good looks, the Chopper was a slow, heavy and cumbersome bike outperformed by pretty much all other bicycles.

Sir Jimmy Saville is your host for an explosion of Glam Rock Goodies,

Jim'll Fix It

"Now then young man, you wrote to me to ask if you could meet Evel Knievel…How’s about that?" New-age Santa Jimmy Saville promised to fulfil the dreams of thousands of children who wrote to his show, mostly wanting to meet The Bay City Rollers.

Thousands of requests flooded in. The winners, who each went away with a shiny ‘gold’ medal, were usually those who asked to visit a biscuit factory or learn how to feed the poor.

sweeney175

The Sweeney

Hard-drinking Flying Squad coppers Regan (John Thaw) and Carter (Dennis Waterman) chased villains around London in flash cars, shouting "Shut it!" a lot. The show became notorious because the cops were almost as bent as the robbers, and the bad guys quite often got away with it.
